Teaching
Dianne is acknowledged to be one of Australia’s leading teachers, and travels regularly throughout Australia and New Zealand teaching the art of “needle turn” appliqué and “shattered glass”.
Dianne Johnston specialises in the art of “needle turn” hand appliqué. This form of hand appliqué is the only method that will enable the artist to do all techniques and patterns of appliqué. Dianne is a designer of floral appliqué and her classes revolve around her original designs. Because of her formal training in floral art, the designs feature good balance of the flowers, lifelike use of colour, and balance of colour within the designs. The classes focus on the technique of “needle turn" appliqué, with emphasis on invisible stitches, sharp points, smooth curves, and fray free concave corners. Dianne has a clear and easy to understand method of teaching, and makes the classes enjoyable and rewarding for all students. Hand appliqué being a time consuming technique usually requires a two day class to put the students on the way with their project, but there are a few one day classes which focus on technique rather than large projects. Students can usually choose to do either a large or small piece of appliqué in all the classes.
New classes have been added in the “shattered glass” technique. This is a form of “stained glass” which requires no black bias, and can be completed in a couple of days, all on the machine. Classes can be achieved in one day, and students have many designs to choose from. These classes have proved to be extremely popular.
